Empowering students of all ages through Woodworking
From handcrafted furniture to purpose-driven designs, JD Ospina seamlessly integrates traditional woodworking methods, mathematics, and modern technology to create extraordinary projects. Along the way, he empowers others by teaching them to advance their own woodworking skills.
Why woodworking: A Pathway to excellence
Woodworking cultivates creativity, refines manual dexterity, and hones problem-solving skills. By integrating modern tools and technology with time-honored techniques, aspiring craftspeople can push boundaries and elevate their work to new heights.
At its core, woodworking is about harnessing the right tools to transform wood—a natural resource that has accompanied humanity for ages—into both functional and artistic creations that we can enjoy today.
What is My Role with Technology?
As a certified technology & math teacher in Stamford, CT I guide my students through hands-on classes in wood shop, auto tech, and power mechanics, helping them understand the critical role that tools play in achieving a desired outcome.
The essence of my teaching lies in demystifying how things work, whether we’re breaking down blenders to explore their inner mechanics, building wooden chairs to practice precision and craftsmanship, or installing two-stroke motors in bicycles to learn about engine mechanics. From performing standard oil changes on cars to building electromagnets, my classrooms are filled with opportunities for students to engage with and understand the natural world around them.
Empowering Students Through Hands-On Woodwork Learning and Innovative Technology Integration.
In my classroom, projects are always evolving, driven by the curiosity and creativity of my students. A new area of interest for us is the integration of microprocessors, such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi. These mini-computers can be programmed and equipped with sensors to interact with the physical environment, opening up endless possibilities , particularly when paired with wooden creations.
We’re constantly experimenting with new ideas and finding inventive ways to apply technology to solve everyday problems, making our learning experience dynamic and relevant to the world around us.
How Woodworking empowers us
Woodworking fosters a “can-do” attitude by strengthening self-reliance and independence—traits that are increasingly vital in our tech-centric, smartphone-driven world. Through woodworking, students develop practical skills that transfer to countless industries and careers, learning to be resourceful, embrace constraints, and maximize the materials at hand.
These experiences encourage creativity, innovation, and long-term success, all while offering the tangible reward of building something by hand.

I use 3D software to create custom plans and I teach students how to use software so they can design their own plans to share with others

I also incorporate math in all of my woodworking lesson plans.
